Program's Goal: Get Everyone Counted In 2010 Census
One way communities are trying to energize residents about the 2010 census is through a program created by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Complete Count Committee program creates a team of community leaders who develop and implement an outreach and awareness campaign for census participation. The committees are sort of like local cheerleaders for the census.
Harper Woods City Manager James Leidlein said officials will encourage residents to be counted by publishing notices in the city newsletter and, as the time gets closer, on the electronic board in front of City Hall.
Leidlein said the city is considering creating a Complete Count Committee.
Sterling Heights City Council may pass a resolution Tuesday that encourages community groups to cooperate with the Census Bureau to ensure an accurate count.
The city plans to urge residents to be counted through media blitzes via e-mail and on radio and the local TV station, Community Relations Director Steve Guitar said.
"It's in everyone's best interest to participate," he said.
