Ballot measures have been a tool to (1) recruit, mobilize and energize activists on both sides of the political spectrum, (2) increase turnout of key voters, (3) frame the election cycle around particular ideas, (4) drain or divert resources from an opponent and (5) help define issues and candidates in the eyes of voters. In 2010, this will be true again and particularly so in a midterm election year.
On Monday, November 2nd, join FCCP as we continue our conversation about what’s at stake in the midterm elections with a focus on the 2010 ballot measure landscape. Hear speakers Kristina Wilfore from the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center and Robb Gray from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities discuss which issues will likely reach the ballot and the strategies and organizations behind them. Kristina and Robb will also provide an Election Day Eve update on the 2009 TABOR and same-sex relationship recognition ballot measures in Maine and Washington State, and discuss what these campaigns mean for ballot measure organizing in 2010. Finally, Ellen Freidin, Fair Districts Florida campaign chair, will provide an overview and update on the ballot measure campaign to bring fairness to the Florida redistricting process.
