Oct 29: DC Voting Rights - A Funders’ Briefing on the Impact of Voting Rights in Congress for DC Residents

Nearly 600,000 Washington, DC, residents pay federal taxes, fight in wars and serve on juries, yet have no vote in Congress. Because of the hard work of DC Vote and 85 local and national coalition partners, DC is at the precipice of achieving full voting rights in the House of Representatives. In order to end taxation without representation, a national strategy and action plan is necessary because Congress – with no full voting representative from DC – has the power to grant DC voting rights.read more >>

Oct 15: League of Conservation Voters Education Fund briefing on their '08 Nonpartisan Civic Engagement Activities

On Thursday October 15, 2009, please join Allison Barlow, FCCP Co-Chair, and other interested funders for a short New York City briefing by the League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (LCVEF) on their nonpartisan civic engagement activities in 2008.

LCVEF activities included vote-by-mail, new models to encourage down-ballot voting and innovative voter file work. This session should offer some interesting success stories as well as lessons and insights for 2010. read more >>

Pew Report finds Internet gives people hope that they can influence politics

When it comes to online activities such as contributing money, contacting a government official or signing an online petition, the wealthy and well-educated continue to lead the way.

Still, there are hints that the new forms of civic engagement anchored in blogs and social networking sites could alter long-standing patterns. Some 19% of internet users have posted material online about political or social issues or used a social networking site for some form of civic or political engagement. And this group of activists is disproportionately young.read more >>
